DAT Exam (General Training) – Test Overview

Master the sciences, sharpen your reasoning, and build the confidence to succeed in your dental school journey

The Dental Admission Test (DAT) is a standardized examination required by dental schools across the United States and Canada. Designed to evaluate a candidate’s readiness and aptitude for dental education, the DAT measures a wide range of academic abilities, scientific understanding, and perceptual skills essential for success in dental school.

At Globewarts, we prepare students to master every component of the DAT General Training, ensuring a strong foundation for their dental career journey.

What is the DAT General Training Exam?

The DAT General Training focuses on assessing a student's proficiency in core academic subjects, cognitive reasoning, and perceptual ability. This exam is not just about academic knowledge — it also measures critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail, which are all vital attributes for a successful dental professional.

Candidates must demonstrate competency across multiple domains to showcase their preparedness for the rigorous demands of dental programs.

Sections of the DAT Exam

The DAT is divided into four major sections:

1. Survey of the Natural Sciences

This section tests knowledge in three critical scientific areas:

  • Biology: Covers topics like cell biology, genetics, physiology, developmental biology, evolution, and ecology.

  • General Chemistry: Assesses understanding of atomic structure, stoichiometry, chemical bonding, thermodynamics, and acid-base chemistry.

  • Organic Chemistry: Focuses on reaction mechanisms, structure and stability of molecules, stereochemistry, and functional group transformations.

Total Questions: 100
 Time: 90 minutes

2. Perceptual Ability Test (PAT)

The PAT assesses the ability to visualize and manipulate objects mentally. Strong spatial reasoning and hand-eye coordination are crucial for dental work.

PAT subtests include:

  • Apertures (keyholes)

  • View recognition (top/front/end)

  • Angle discrimination

  • Paper folding

  • Cube counting

  • 3D form development

Total Questions: 90
 Time: 60 minutes

3. Reading Comprehension

This section tests the ability to read, interpret, and analyze passages on scientific topics. Students must extract key information, infer meaning, and answer questions based on the reading material.

Total Questions: 50
 Time: 60 minutes

4. Quantitative Reasoning

This section measures basic mathematical ability and problem-solving skills. Topics covered include:

  • Algebra

  • Data analysis

  • Probability and statistics

  • Conversions

  • Word problems

Total Questions: 40
 Time: 45 minutes

DAT Exam Duration

The total test time for the DAT is approximately 5 hours, including optional breaks. It is critical to manage time effectively in each section to maximize performance.

Scoring System

Each DAT section is scored on a scale of 1 to 30, with 20 considered an average score.

  • Academic Average: The mean of scores in Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Reading Comprehension, and Quantitative Reasoning.

  • PAT Score: Reported separately and essential for dental school evaluation.

  • Dental schools typically look for an Academic Average of around 19–21 or higher, depending on competitiveness.

Results are available within 3–4 weeks after testing and are valid for 3 years.

Importance of the DAT General Training

  • Essential for Dental School Admission: Most dental schools require the DAT as part of the admissions process.

  • Demonstrates Academic Preparedness: Showcases mastery in science, mathematics, reading, and perceptual skills.

  • Sets the Foundation for Dental Success: The DAT evaluates competencies crucial for succeeding in dental education and practice.

Who Needs to Take the DAT (General) Training?

Identifying the Candidates Who Need to Take DAT Training

The Dental Admission Test (DAT) General Training is essential for individuals who are planning to pursue a career in dentistry and are seeking admission to dental schools in the United States or Canada. The training is specifically designed for candidates who need a strong foundation in academic sciences, critical reasoning, and perceptual skills to succeed on the DAT exam.

You should consider DAT General Training if you are:

1. Aspiring Dental Students

If you’re an undergraduate student or recent graduate planning to apply to dental school, taking the DAT is a critical requirement. DAT training will equip you with the knowledge and exam strategies needed to stand out in competitive admissions processes.

2. Pre-Dental Majors Seeking a Competitive Edge

Even if you're early in your undergraduate studies, enrolling in DAT training can give you a long-term advantage. Early preparation strengthens your academic performance in key subjects like biology, chemistry, and math.

3. International Students Applying to U.S. or Canadian Dental Schools

If you completed your education outside of the U.S. or Canada and plan to apply to dental schools in either country, the DAT is usually a mandatory requirement. General Training helps bridge the gap between different education systems and ensures you meet the exam's standards.

4. Repeat Test-Takers Looking to Improve Scores

Have you taken the DAT before but didn’t achieve your target score? Enrolling in a structured DAT training program can help identify weak areas, improve your performance, and boost your confidence for the next attempt.

5. Students Struggling with Science or Perceptual Skills

The DAT includes complex scientific concepts and the Perceptual Ability Test (PAT), which many students find challenging. Focused training is highly beneficial if you need support in understanding chemistry, biology, or 3D spatial reasoning.

6. Those Seeking Guidance and Accountability

Self-study isn’t for everyone. If you benefit from expert guidance, structured study schedules, and regular assessments, a DAT General Training program can offer the support and accountability you need to stay on track and succeed.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Dental Admission Test (DAT) is a standardized exam required for admission to dental schools in the United States and Canada. It assesses knowledge in natural sciences, perceptual ability, reading comprehension, and quantitative reasoning.

The DAT exam includes four main sections: Survey of Natural Sciences, which covers Biology, Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry; Perceptual Ability Test (PAT); Reading Comprehension; and Quantitative Reasoning.

The DAT exam lasts a total of 4 hours and 15 minutes, with 90 minutes for the Survey of Natural Sciences, 60 minutes each for the Perceptual Ability Test and Reading Comprehension, and 45 minutes for Quantitative Reasoning.

Each section of the DAT is scored on a scale of 1 to 30, with 30 being the highest possible score. The average score for test-takers is typically around 17. The scores are then combined to create an overall performance rating.

Preparation for the DAT includes studying key subjects such as biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, and mathematics, as well as practicing with perceptual ability exercises. You can also take practice tests to familiarize yourself with the exam format and improve your timing.

You can take the DAT once every 90 days and up to three times per year. If you wish to retake the test, you must wait 90 days after your previous attempt.

The DAT exam fee is approximately $495 (subject to change). This fee includes the cost of sending scores to up to 4 dental schools. Additional fees may apply for sending scores to more institutions or for other services.
